Premier League Final Matchday Drama
The final
Premier League matchday is here and it’s awfully close. We’ve got only a few
hours till the games kick-off later in the evening, and the anticipation might
just be driving most of us crazy. Especially after this week’s midweek games
that saw Manchester United get only one point against West Ham United, who
secured another year of Premier League action, and Chelsea lose 5-3 against
Liverpool, who were finally given the Premier League trophy.
Champions League
Qualification
Realistically,
there are three teams competing for the two spots which ensure Champions League
football for next season. Manchester United, Chelsea and Leicester City are the
three teams which would look to ensure their fans see them competing in the big
leagues.
Manchester
United will be playing against Leicester City in what would be the most crucial
game of the night in terms of a Champions League spot and Chelsea play against
Wolves, which would also be a decisive match.
The current
scenario is such that both Chelsea and Manchester United will qualify if they
both draw their respective games, meaning, they need one point each to qualify.
Leicester City will go through if their game ends in a draw only if Chelsea loses
to Wolves, due to their superior goal difference. If Leicester City wants a
guaranteed Champions League spot, they will have to win, without a doubt,
against Manchester United. Chelsea will go through with a draw against Wolves.
Manchester
United – Need 1 point for definite qualification. A win will also give them the
spot. A loss will help them only if Chelsea, too, lose.
Chelsea –
Need 1 point for definite qualification. A win will also give them the spot. A loss will only be okay if Manchester United beat Leicester City.
Leicester
City – Need to win against Manchester United to go through. A draw will only be
beneficial if Chelsea loses to Wolves. A loss is of no help to Leicester City.
Relegation Battle
There are
three teams that will be fighting off relegation today. Bournemouth, Watford
and Aston Villa are the teams who would want to avoid the drop this season.
Bournemouth will be playing against mid-table Everton, Watford plays against a
weak and inconsistent Arsenal. Aston Villa will be playing West Ham, in what is
maybe the most important game of the three.
Aston Villa
– A win will give them an almost sure chance to stay up, if Watford wins, it
will come down to who scores more goals and concedes more in their respective
games. A draw is only beneficial if both Watford and Bournemouth lose or draw
their respective games. A loss will hurt if Watford win or even draw against
Arsenal
Watford – A win will help them only if Aston Villa draw or lose. If Villa wins their game,
Watford will have to ensure they score two more goals than Aston Villa. A draw
helps them only if Aston Villa loses. A loss will virtually send them down unless Aston Villa loses by a greater margin.
Bournemouth
– A win will be the only way they still have a chance of staying up, that too,
only if Aston Villa and Watford lose their respective games. If either of them
does not lose, Bournemouth can still stay up depending on how many goals were
scored and how many were conceded. Neither a loss nor a draw will help them stay
up.
